Self-Care Spring Cleaning

spongesparkleIt may be the end of April but chances are you’re probably still feeling the winter’s lingering chill (unless you’re lucky enough to live in the Southwest)! A phrase we hear a lot during the beginning of spring is “spring cleaning.” Spring cleaning is a good opportunity to clear both our minds and the space we live in. Between the shorter days and cold weather, winter can put a damper on one’s mood and spring is a good time to breathe breaths of fresh air and lift weight off our shoulders.

Negativity, whether it’s your thoughts or negative people in your life, is one thing to consider weeding out. Negative thoughts tend to come easy to most people, and while you may not be able to rid yourself of them entirely, you can get rid of the overwhelming power they can have on your life. Try to notice your thinking patterns and write down the thoughts that come into your mind, no matter how trivial they may seem. Observe your thoughts without judging them or yourself. For the negative thoughts, try to find a counterargument and turn them into positive thoughts that you believe. It can be difficult to do at first, but once you get the hang of it you’ll realize how much power you have over your thoughts and how beneficial it can be to your mood.

Cleaning out your living space is another area of spring cleaning you can partake in. Objects oftentimes create a lot of unnecessary clutter and weeding them out can help declutter both our mind and space. Sometimes we hold onto objects that remind us of the past, and while that isn’t always harmful, sometimes getting rid of such objects is therapeutic and helps us let go of parts of the past that we were holding onto in an unhealthy way. You may have books, clothes, toys, or jewelry that once served a purpose to you, but no longer do. You can donate those items to someone who needs them more which will leave you feeling good. It can be hard to get rid of items because they have happy memories attached to them, but remember that the memories will always be there regardless of if you have the item or not.

One of my favorite things about springtime is seeing the leaves grow back on trees and the flowers bloom. It gives me hope and encouragement, reminding me that no matter what life throws at us, there is always light, life and beauty at the end of the tunnel.
